Guidelines

The Radio Astronomy Winter School for faculty and students of colleges and universities (RAWS-2024), a joint initiative of IUCAA and NCRA-TIFR Pune, will be organized by IUCAA's Astronomy Centre for Educators (ACE) along with the NCRA, during December 14 - 24, 2024. The Astronomy Centre for Educators (ACE) at IUCAA promotes astronomy education in the country in theoretical and experimental domains, with an emphasis on higher education. Both the institutions provide facilities for teaching radio physics and radio astronomy techniques using simple hands on radio physics experiments. The facilities include radio telescope equipped with 21-cm radio receivers to observe the Sun, Hydrogen gas in our Galaxy and other radio sources. Available equipment also include radio receivers operating at 408 MHz, various test and measurement instruments, and laboratory experiments demonstrating fundamental principles of radio physics.

Participation:

The winter school is open to faculty members, educators and 2nd-year and 3rd-year undergraduate (UG) students in Science (B.Sc./B.S.) as well as 5-year integrated postgraduate (PG) programs M.Sc./M.S. and Engineering (B.E./B.Tech.) only. Students other than 2nd/3rd year of their UG or integrated PG are not eligible to apply. Regular master's (MSc/MS/ME/MTech) students are not eligible to apply. All participants should have a strong interest in Astronomy and Astrophysics.

Participants will work in groups on experiments and present their work together. Students are requested to register using the form through the 'Apply Online' link in the navigation menu at the top of this page. College/University faculty, postdoctoral fellows, research scholars, & tutors/ demonstrators, interested in introducing radio astronomy in undergraduate/post-graduate teaching or research are encouraged to apply through the form available at https://bit.ly/raws2024faculty.

Programme:

The participants will get introduced to radio astronomy through a series of lectures, demonstrations, and hands-on experiments. Our approach will be the hands-on way of teaching radio astronomy. They will also get ample opportunity to carry out simple radio astronomy experiments and learn about the operation of radio telescopes. They will also participate in informal group discussions and other activities that enhance the learning experience.

Travel and Stay:

This year the school will be held at Pune within IUCAA and NCRA-TIFR campuses.
